Poly-Cast, in conjunction with Tony Christler of M. Holland hosted another successful Lunch & Learn event at the Xenium HR facility on July 28th. As the featured speaker, Tony’s presentation focused on resin selection. The event was attended by engineers and product designers from a variety of industries.
Tony began with a “Plastics 101” segment where the distinctions between amorphous and semi-crystalline thermoplastics were presented. The unique properties of each were presented, as knowing the significant differences between the two families can help expedite the material selection process. Following the layout of the basics of polymer selection was Tony’s “TRACERS” acronym for a checklist of variables to take into account for product design. “TRACERS” stands for: toughness, rigidity, appearance, cost, environment, regulatory, and substantiate. Knowing each of these elements is a great way for saving time when discussing what polymer to select with the engineer in charge of a project.
To help with finding the specific compound of resin and additives: a walk-through of the RTP company product guide was demonstrated. The RTP guide is one of, if not the most comprehensive resources available to find and compare specific resin compounds along with varying levels of additives. Finally, a walk-through of the M. Holland technical guide was done. The M. Holland manual gives an explanation of each of the tests done to the different thermoplastics, as well as results.
The event was a great success and we sincerely thank Tony Christler for his presentation. Stay tuned for our next event!
